3rD WEEK - women in stem networking event
Monday, 1st Feb
6:00 - 8:30 pm
Our soapbox style speakers will raise your awareness of the rich ecosystem of women working in STEM at Oxford by sharing their research with you in an engaging and informative way, including topics such as machine learning and renewable fusion to AI and computing in Physics!

3RD WEEK -the future of artificail intelligience panel
Thursday, 4th Feb
5:00 - 6:30 pm
It’s universally acknowledged that artificial intelligence has drastically improved the work efficiency and freed us from doing repetitive tasks. Yet, is artificial intelligence really accurate, unbiased and capable of mimicking human intelligence? The horror behind the prevalence of artificial intelligence lies beyond matters like unemployment. Incidents like fatality involving a self-driving car, racial and gender discrimination have alerted engineers and companies to the consequences of implementing an unethical AI. This panel discussion explores the issue from multiple aspects and here is a list of our panel members:
Prof. Sandra Wachter - A researcher focusing on legal and ethical implications of AI, Big Data, and robotics as well as profiling, inferential analytics, explainable AI, algorithmic bias, diversity, and fairness, governmental surveillance, predictive policing, and human rights online.
Kathy Gong - A Chinese entrepreneur who has launched a series of companies like the gaming company WafaGames and ai.Law, a robotics start-up that makes law accessible and affordable, and that has served 6 million people, 67 percent of them women. On the other hand, WafaGames employs game Artificial Intelligence and real-time strategy algorithms.
Elena Sinel - A multi-award-winning social entrepreneur on a mission to revolutionise education across the globe. Teens In AI is Elena’s latest initiative, spurred by her passion for AI and its ability to create a positive and lasting impact on the world. It offers teenagers early exposure to AI through a combination of expert mentoring, talks, workshops in AI/ML, human-centred design and ethics, hackathons, accelerators, company tours and networking opportunities. The vision is for AI to be developed by a diverse group of thinkers and doers advancing AI for humanity’s benefit.

5TH WEEK - informal discussion social
Friday, 13 Nov
7:30 / 8 pm
If you like the idea of sharing and gaining insights into different fields of STEM, and meeting other members over a hot drink and a cinnamon bun, our informal discussion social is for you.
During the first part of the event, any of our attendees will have the opportunity to give an overview of their postgraduate projects or simply an area they are interested in.
In soapbox style (just your voice, no powerpoint), you will gain some public speaking and science communication practise. For our attendees who would just like to listen, you might become fascinated by a topic you had never heard of.
The second part of the event will be a time to bounce ideas off each other as we discuss a subject relevant to women and/or STEM which all our attendees can contribute to if they would like.
Lastly, we hope the event will be a time for our members to get to know each other and bring the OxWEST community to life. Please note that we have limited spaces, so only sign-up if you can commit. We are looking forward to seeing those of you there! Sign up soon to secure your place: link
